2008 brings new opportunities and responsibilities and exciting new partnerships as we initiate
conservation in the areas east of Oakland County that drain into Lake St. Clair. This initiative
takes in most of the main and north branches of the Clinton River and parts of the Belle River
watershed. Further development and mapping of this priority area is underway.
Macomb County
Land Conservation in Macomb County has its roots with the
Macomb Land Conservancy, which was founded
in 2000 by a group of concerned citizens working to preserve a 63-acre parcel of mature upland and
swamp forest on the Coon Creek, in Ray Township. The all-volunteer Conservancy saw an imperative
need in Macomb County to preserve our remaining open spaces and gathered to make a difference in
their communities. In late 2007, Macomb Land Conservancy dissolved and combined its membership
and service area with Oakland Land Conservancy. To ensure continuity during the transition and
to provide representation from Macomb County, Macomb Land Conservancy Trustee Tony Feldhus has
joined the Board of Trustees of the Oakland Land Conservancy. We are very pleased to welcome
the dedication and experience of the Macomb Land Conservancy as we work together to conserve
the forests, wetlands, wildlife habitats, farmlands, rivers, and streams of Macomb County.
Macomb County is experiencing rapid growth; making planning at all levels of government
more important and more complicated. Our work in Macomb County is greatly facilitated by
our new partnership with the Planning and Environmental Services (PES) department of Macomb
County Planning and Economic Development. The PES department strives to reach across
municipal boundaries to address common issues that impact all jurisdictions and fosters
coordination between communities by educating, promoting, enhancing, and advocating
for sound planning practices.
